A new fence can be installed for aesthetics, privacy, and/or security. But first, you’ll have to decide which type of fence you want. And, that depends on how much you’re willing to spend just as much as your reasons for putting a fence up in the first place.

So, how much does it cost to install the fence of your dreams?

The answer is, it depends. Of course, you can save a little bit of money by installing it yourself. We recommend you hire professionals to get it done right because labor is not much more for what it’s worth. Otherwise, the cost of materials varies for each fence.

If you’re in the market for a new fence but don’t know what to expect, then you’re in the right place. In this article, we’re breaking down each type of fence installation cost so that you can map out your budget.

2019 Fence Installation Cost

What it boils down to is that your fence cost is based on your fencing options. Fence installation labor runs anywhere from $30 to around $50 per hour which will include several workers. You’ll save time and money having your fence installed by the pros because they’ll get it done quickly and your fence will require less maintenance down the road.

Beyond that, your contractor receives discounts on parts which they can extend to you. And, they’re familiar with how to work around utilities and reading building permits.

With that said, let’s take a look at what you can expect to pay for materials.

Aluminum Fencing

Aluminum fencing is a durable choice. It costs anywhere from $22 to $32 per linear foot making an average yard run about $2,000 to $5,000.

Aluminum fencing requires little maintenance and is not prone to rust. With proper installation, these fences will last several decades.

Chain Link Fencing/Metal

Chain link or metal fencing is the most cost-effective option for a new fence. It can run anywhere from $1,100 to $2,300 for a basic yard or $14 to $19 per linear foot installed.

This durable fencing is easy to install and you can choose from a few different styles including metallic-coated, color-coated, and estate fencing which is a type of steel fencing. Estate fencing has a slightly different design than regular chain link. Metallic-coated and color-coated materials are a bit more aesthetic.

Wire Fencing

Wire fencing is a popular choice for those that want to save money from vinyl and wood fencing. It keeps critters and kids in, or out, and it’s low maintenance to boot. This type of fencing can also be used aesthetically with wooden slats to add character.

You can expect to pay around $2,500 for a basic wire fence that stretches no more than one-quarter mile. This comes out to just shy of $2 per linear foot.

Vinyl Fencing

While vinyl fencing is more expensive up front, it pays off in low-cost maintenance and long lasting durability. You can expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 for a small yard. This is based on the cost factor of $10 to $25 per linear foot just for materials.

It’s important to note that you should not install vinyl if you receive heavy snowfall or drastically cold temperatures in the winter months. Vinyl can be brittle in the cold.

Wood Fencing

Wood fencing is difficult to break down because of the different types of wood that you can use. Cedar, for example, only runs about $1.50 per plank or fence board. Redwood, on the other hand, costs around $8.00 each.

Wood, however, provides great security and privacy. It does require a bit more maintenance than other fence types including staining or painting on a regular basis. A well-built wood fence should last anywhere from 15-25 years.

Wrought Iron Fencing

The most expensive but absolutely luxurious option is wrought iron fencing. It runs anywhere from $100 to $300 per linear foot but is also the most secure type of fencing available.

Wrought iron is prone to rust so it’s not suggested in rainy climates. It can also ding and dent easily making it a lesser material for pets and kids.

Pool Fencing

Property fencing is required if you have a pool in your back yard. You may use chain link, wood, vinyl, or aluminum fence to secure your pool area but keep in mind that you’ll also need at least one gate. This will cost significantly more but we’ll get to that in a moment.

If you live in a neighborhood without fences, you’ll at least need a pool fence that meets the specific safety codes. These may include base height and space between bars.

Most homeowners use an aluminum fence for their pool areas. Keep in mind that it only needs to be four feet tall so you may save a little money on materials. Pool fences generally measure around 200-350 feet in circumference.

Gates

Adding a gate is where your fencing costs start to really add up. Of course, you’ll probably want a gate to your yard even if you don’t have a pool so it’s important to budget for this cost.

A four-foot chain link gate that swings will run about $100 for materials and installation. A larger gate on a wheeled caster system will run upwards of $800 to $1,000 installed.

Wood gates are only about $75 to $100 for single-wood and double-wood gates respectively. Vinyl, of course, gets quite expensive. You can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $1,500 depending on the type and size of your vinyl gate.

Final Thoughts

Keep in mind that your fence installation cost will vary depending on the size of your property. It will take much longer to complete a larger project than a pool fence, for example.

You can save some money if you don’t need a fence but want to keep animals or other people out of your yard by installing an electric fence. This is a task you should definitely leave up to the professionals because working with electricity can be very dangerous.
